Our farms, grocery shelves, kitchen tables all are filled with meaning. This course explores food through writing and offers an opportunity to make sense of our foodways through creating stories, histories, and poems about what we eat, how we eat it, and why.
This is a writing course that will introduce students to various types of food writing including non-fiction essays, reviews, and histories, fictional short stories, and poetry. The class is a local writing class which means we will explore foodways through writing. The class will use site visits and talks from people in our local foodscape as inspiration for writing projects. Participants may hear from local farmers, chefs, and food producers. We will read stories about food, and become food writers. Each week we will explore a certain theme, using that theme as an entry point for writing about food. The course will include in-class workshops, out-of-class readings, local site visits, and tastings.
Themes may include:
- Farm
- Restaurant
- Grocer
- Food Bank
- Winery
- Potluck
- Coffee House
- Bar Room
- Co-Op
- Dumpster
- Walmart Supercenter
- Forest
- Home
